PermaLink 1987-04-04 Tempe "Governor Meacham & MLK" Silver CD04/12/2008 09:26:48 AM
I had some grand piece written up about this bootleg, and just as I was about to make my final edit and save it, the blasted application chose that exact moment to freeze up.  Lost the whole thing.  Bother!  Hate that.  Well, the general idea of that masterpiece of prose, which I will now only paraphrase because I'm too irritated to re-write the whole darn thing, is that I selected this week's bootleg for three reasons.

First, it had to be a significant recording.  I feel that this second night of the Joshua Tree tour defines the tour as a whole, and U2 as the biggest band in the world at the time.  Other performances later in the tour may have been stronger or better, but this set the tone for the next eight months.  Second, it had to be a memorable performance, and I think this one qualifies.  It's the start of the tour, and already Bono's voice is failing him.  The dry desert air of Arizona left him hoarse.  The first night didn't go so well, but this night Bono found strength in adversity and his professionalism and passion break through inspite of his ailment.  Third and finally, the sound quality had to be very good yet it had to have a certain ambience to it, a certain sound.  My memories about The Joshua Tree are very specific - cassette tape in a small boombox-style tape deck.  While you can hear all the instruments and lyrics quite clearly, this still sounds like a cassette tape or a very good transistor radio.  You kids won't know what I'm talking about, but those of you in my age bracket or higher will instantly recognize - and, I hope, appreciate - the kind of sound this recording has.

This recording comes from a silver CD bootleg, and the publisher included several extra tracks from later concerts. I do hope you enjoy it.

Great stuff again. I'm of the younger generation so I have no idea what you were talking about when mentioning boom boxes etc. This will mot likely be a massive upgrade over the lossy version I have. Thanks as ever
